Kirby WIN Recognition Program

A great manager recognizes his or her employees for the work they do because recognition promotes self-satisfaction of the employee, company loyalty, and a positive working environment. The more satisfied crews are with the job, the safer, better job they will do. In 2007, Kirby Inland Marine began researching an easy and rewarding recognition program that would supplement the current Special Recognition program. The Special Recognition program was originally intended to recognize those individuals who went above and beyond their job. But for a true recognition culture to develop, managers must recognize the small day-to-day events that are worth noting. To make this easy, fun, and rewarding, Kirby Inland Marine is implementing a new recognition program, the Kirby WINS program. Kirby/KLM WINS – What’s Important Now – will begin on May 1st. Captains will be managing the program.
New and Improved Bunker Barge in the Houston Fleet

Have you noticed the new and improved bunker barge floating around in our Houston fleets? It’s the Kirby 20700 which is Kirby’s venture into improving the working environment on bunker barges while at the same time improving the service we provide to our customers. When the bunker department started looking for another potential bunker barge, the top priority Senior Port Captain Donny Nolan had in mind was a big barge with a flat deck. He found the qualities he was looking for in the former Coastal 2525 which was renamed the Kirby 20700. In Southwest Shipyard in the San Jacinto River the barge underwent a complete makeover starting with completely clearing the deck of the barge of unneeded equipment and clutter. All above deck piping was grouped together and kept as far out of the way of the main working area as possible, giving the crew a safer, more worker friendly environment. The barge also received two fuel oil deepwell pumps powered by two new Cummins engines, which will act...

KLM's Top Guns!

What is a Top Gun Tankerman anyway? Well, we are so glad you asked. A Top Gun Tankerman is a Shore Tankerman that has gone through many years of advanced training to become an expert at what he/she does. That is the short answer. The minimum requirements to become a Top Gun Tankerman are as follows. They must have completed 100% of the KLM Training Matrix. The training matrix consists of several different types of training. The types included are CPR, Basic Firefighting, HAZWOPER, Bottle Watch, etc. They must possess leadership skills. A Shore Tankerman must have his tankerman ticket a minimum of five years. They must pass three levels of written tests as listed below:

1) Basic PIC (Person in Charge), Barge DL (Dangerous Liquid) Tankerman Test
2) Advanced Tankerman Test
3) Top Gun Tankerman Test

KLM currently has several Top Gun Tankermen (pictures reflect order of names):

Cecil Castille

Mike Dillon

Warren Spencer

Tom Pollard

Ghandi George-Brown

Joey Colchado

Kal Kittley

Oza Fuller

Jake Glenn

Bill Robinson

Chris Polk

Being a Top Gun Tankerman is quite an accomplishment, since KLM currently has 159 Shore Tankermen. After completion of training, Top Gun’s are qualified for every type of barge cargo and vessel that KLM handles. Next time you meet one, feel free to ask them some tough questions about tankering barges, or just congratulate them on becoming an expert in their field.

At KLM, we are very proud of our Top Guns!

Good afternoon everyone! It's Lisa Nally and I wanted to share a cool site that will help you online. In order to answer questions about the technology available, I created a free blog. It is now open and available for discussion.

Check it out at www.kirbyinlandmarine.wordpress.com. The best part? You DON'T have to log in to read it! No login nor no password! Just click the link and start reading.

All helpful hints, instructions, solutions are easily available online and accessible to everyone! It’s an easy way to get updates instantly without having to wait for instructional manuals or boat mail.

For the most part, I will communicate any changes through this venue. If necessary, I will reprint technology guides but in order to save paper, most new updates will be through this site.

Leave me comments/questions/concerns! I promise I’ll respond!

Have a great day and be safe out there!
Early Stroke Detection

I recently received an e-mail to early stroke detection. The story contained in the e-mail related a story of failure to recognize a victim had suffered a mild stroke. The article includes some simple methods to help identify if a victim ahs suffered a stroke.

• S Ask the individual to smile.
• T Ask the person to talk and speak a simple sentence.
• R Ask the person to raise both arms.

I also read that you can ask a person to stick out their tongue. If it goes to one side or the other, it could be a sing that the person has had a mild stroke.

When considering the above, if a person has a problem with any of the above items, they may have had a stroke and need medical attention.
Changes in CPR

I recently saw a story on the evening news highlighting the American Heart Association (AHA) revised its CPR standards. The change impacts adult victims of sudden cardiac arrest.

The AHA is now advising calling 911 and hands only CPR, rapid deep presses on the victims chest until help arrives, works just as well as standard CPR for sudden cardiac arrest in adults. The two process is simple.

• Call 911
• Push hard and fast on the middle of the chest

There are a few exceptions to the advisement when mouth to mouth CPR is required. The exceptions are:

• It is a child
• Lack of oxygen from near drowning
• Lack of oxygen from drug overdose
• Carbon Monoxide poisoning

Help Us to Help the Community!

Fellow Kirby employees:

Did you know that most of us throw away items that can help a burned child victim in need or give parents of a child receiving various medical treaaments a place to be close to their child every single day? Most of also throw away items that can provide everyday meal items, new books, or new playground equpiment? They are the aluminum soda pop tabs of the cokes we drink everyday and the box tops on various dry goods we eat.

It is easy to save these items - just tear them off before throwing the container away. I have arranged for the Old River Library to have a collection jar available so when you leave the boat for class or crew change, drop off your boat's collected pop tabs or box tops. You may also give these items to Port Captain BJ McKinney who will give them to me, Captain Swidersky. The best thing about this program is every day trash is being used to make a difference in a child's life at their time of need. It's an inexpensive, easy way to make a big difference in the lives of children and their families. All aluminum tabs will be donated to the Galveston Shriner's Burn Hospital and the Ronald McDonald House charities. The box tops will be donated to local schools around the area.

If you have any questions, please call me on the M/V Comal. Thank you for your time; together we can make a difference.

KLM Top Gun Tankermen - What is a Top Gun Anyway?

1) Basic PIC(Person in Charge) Barge DL(Dangerous Liquid) Tankerman Test
2) Advanced Tankerman Test
3) Top Gun Tankerman Test

KLM currently has several Top Gun Tankermen:

Kal Kittley

Joey Colchado

Chris Polk

Cecil Castille

Tom Pollard

Warren Spencer

Mike Dillon

Ghandi George-Brown

Jake Glenn

Oza Fuller

Bill Robinson

Being a Top Gun Tankerman is quite an accomplishment, since KLM currently has 159 Shore Tankermen. After completion of training, Top Gun’s are qualified for every type of barge cargo and vessel that KLM handles. Next time you meet one, feel free to ask them some tough questions about tankering barges, or just congratulate them on becoming an expert in their field.

At KLM, we are very proud of our Top Guns!
This is the sixth year in a row that this number has declined. Bottom line: the lower the rates number, the fewer injuries that occur.

Another key safety measure is the cargo spill to the water frequency rate. We count up our cargo spills to the water and transfers to calculate how many spills per 1,000 transfers. For the fifth year in a row this number ended at a record low. That rate was 0.46 in 2007.

Other measures clearly show that we are getting the job done safer. This does not just happen by luck. What we have is more and more people engaged in the safety effort and understanding the value of completing each task safely. Ask yourself who benefits from improved safety performance and what you are doing to impact the safety effort. Remember, your opportunities to influence day to day safety cannot be underestimated. You can and do make a difference.

What’s ahead is the challenge to continue what we have started. Continuous improvement towards a goal of zero is the only acceptable objective. Along the way we have set up long range goals to make sure we are challenged towards that goal of zero. I will share more on these goals next time.

401(k) Changes

In conjunction with our switch to Merrill Lynch for the 401(k) Plan, we are pleased to announce the following changes, effective January 1, 2008: THE WAITING PERIOD HAS BEEN REDUCED: The waiting period for enrollment has been reduced from one year to three months for all eligible employees. Many employees who were hired during 2007 will be able to enroll in the plan sooner than expected. THE KIRBY STOCK FUND VALUATION METHOD HAS CHANGED: The Plan will switch the valuation method for the Kirby Stock Fund from unitized value to share accounting. The unitized method required a small percentage of the fund to remain in cash (not invested in Kirby stock) in order to provide for daily trading. This change means that all of the assets in the fund will be invested in Kirby stock. Please note: This also means if you decide to trade Kirby stock, it will take three business days for the trade to settle. This is the normal process when trading stock.
Our employees’ personal lives do not stop when they get on the boat to work. In addition to the amazing work they do every day, Kirby employees are allowed to indulge in their personal hobbies. These hobbies are assets to the company and they occasionally better the living environment. The M/V J.E. O’Donnell’s crew spent their own time and money renovating their boat over the course of the last few months. Captain Dwayne Kelly and his crew began their renovations in March of 2007 and completed the wheelhouse in September. Their intentions are to renovate the entire boat, a little bit each year. In January, they will begin renovating the wheelhouse. Read up on their progress here. Dwayne Kelly knows this work is the joint efforts of his master carpenter, Claude Caffery, and his fellow carpenter, Josh Owens worked on the boats during their off time to complete this task.
TWIC Card Enrollment Begins

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) was formed immediately following the tragedies of September 11, 2001. TSA is a component of the Department of Homeland Security and is responsible for security of the nation's transportation systems.

The Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) is a TSA and U.S. Coast Guard program. The TWIC is administered by the TSA and enforced by the U.S. Coast Guard.

TWIC is an important security measure that will help ensure that individuals who pose a terror threat do not gain access to secure areas of our nation’s maritime transportation system.

Who must have a TWIC?
All mariners and individuals who will need unescorted access to secure areas of a vessel or maritime facility will need to obtain a TWIC. All mariners holding or obtaining USCG Mariner Licenses and other merchant mariner credentials such as tankerman, ordinary seaman, and able-bodied seaman endorsements must obtain a Transportation Worker Identification Credential.

TWIC Enrollment Process
The TWIC Enrollment process consists of five steps:

Pre-enrollment online. Pre-enroll at www.tsa.gov/twic

Enrollment at a TSA office

Fee collection ($132.50) paid by credit card (Master Card, Visa only). No cash. No checks. If you do not have a credit card, you may pay by cashier’s check.

Security threat assessment and notification of results by the TSA

Issuance of TWIC to the applicant at the same TSA Office where enrollment occurred. Applicant will be notified by email or a phone call.

TWIC cards remain valid for 5 years unless revoked or deactivated. In order to renew a Merchant Mariner Credential, you must have a valid TWIC. All MMDs and licenses will be invalid unless the owner has a valid TWIC card.

Refer to the Fleet Security Bulletin: Transportation Worker Identification Credential TWIC to find where the nearest enrollment center is and to read a little more about this new required license.

Even if you are on the boat, make sure someone is taking your kids trick-or-treating and inspecting candy for any suspicious pieces. How much do you know about Halloween? Enjoy these Halloween facts! The carving of jack-o-lanterns originated from the tradition of carving the faces of lost souls into hollowed out pumpkins and turnips. The worlds fastest time to carve a face into a pumpkin is 54.72 seconds, by Stephen Clarke (USA), on October 23, 2001 (source: Guinness World Records).
Technology Guides Coming To You!

In next month's boat mail, your boat should receive a Kirby Technology Guide. This guide will cover instructions for logging into the website, using your email system, and a guide to our Talent Management System. Please keep this by the 2nd boat PC so everyone on the boat can look over it.

These tools can be used to everyone's advantage - communication can increase between you and the office, your family, and with friends. And with the advent of the TMS system, everything will be tracked digitally and you will be able to take classes on the boat rather than having to travel to the training center.

Please read through it, play around online, and keep it on hand so everyone has a chance to use these great new features.

Beat the Flu This Season

The 2007-2008 flu season is just around the corner. As with any potential problem, now is the time to prepare and educate yourselves about staying healthy during the winter. The towboating lifestyle lends itself to be a victim to the flu season since you live in close quarters, work in wide-ranging weather conditions, and are subjected to stressful situations. Fear not though because there are preventative steps every one us can take that can alleivate a bad flu season.

For those who are comfortable with vaccines and have talked with their doctors, the first line of defense is a flu vaccination. It does not prevent the flu but it protects 70 to 90% of healthy adults from getting pneumonia as a byproduct of the flu. Other precautions include:

Washing your hands frequently with hot water and soap.

Avoid those who have the flu.

Take daily multivitamins and antioxidants. These include berries, teas, and dark chocolate.

Stay hydrated

The biggest thing you can do to protect yourselves and others is to wash your hands with hot water.

Company Picnic a SUCCESS!

On October 13, 2007, employees with friends and family gathered at Old River Fleet to enjoy a gorgeous Saturday afternoon at this year's Kirby Company Picnic.

The picnic was catered by Demeris barbeque who served sausage, brisket, chicken and sides like potato salad and bread. Luther and the Healers returned this year and played 3 hours of blues music which was occasionally interrupted by door prize drawings. Kirby gave away a lap top computer, plane tickets, a portable DVD player, iPod, a digital camera, and a plasma TV. In order to win, participants had to have RSVPed and be in attendance. Cisca Cook took home the most sought-after prize - the 42" plasma tv.

Company picnics are not complete without plenty of activities for children! Kids enjoyed everything from the moon bounces to the slides to the water balloon tosses to the ice cream, though, to be honest, so did many of the adults! The children's water balloon toss ended up being a water balloon fight when kids found the box of water ballons! A few future tankermen and women tried their hands at line tossing (including yours truly) with Oza Fuller's daughter winning first in the women's competition.

Check out our photo gallery to see more from this wonderful event. Make sure to mark your calendar today for next year's picnic, being held on October 18, 2008 at Old River Fleet. See you then!

Restricted Radio Operator Permit Information

As an operator of an Uninspected Towing Vessel all Wheelhouse personnel must hold and have in their possession a Restricted Radio Operator Permit.

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has clarified the requirements for the carriage of a Restricted Radio Operator Permit on board towing vessels. In accordance with 33 CFR 26.03 every Power driven vessel 20 meters or over and every Towing vessel 26ft and over in length must have on board a radiotelephone installation. Additionally in accordance with 47 CFR 80.163 each ship (including these Vessels) must have aboard a radio operator that holds a Restricted Radio Operator Permit. Possession of the appropriate license or proof of application to the FCC will constitute compliance with the FCC rules and with the Navigation Safety Equipment regulations for towing vessels in 33 CFR 164.

If you are in need of the Restricted Radio Operator Permit there are two ways that you can submit for the License. You can contact Elva Flores (713-435-1612) and she will send you the necessary forms to complete and send back to her or you can go online and submit your application http://wireless.fcc.gov/uls/index.htm?job=home. You will need to contact Elva Flores for the FRN number and password. You can also register with the FCC and get a FRN number.

Licensing Update - IDs are a MUST!

As of 05/14/07, the US Coast Guard will not be able to begin a background check without 2 forms of ID.

1. A state-issued Driver's License (ID)
2. Birth Certificate or US Passport (Citizenship)

If the mariner holds an MMD with a serial number on it, It can be used for citizenship.

Previously the coast guard would except one ID, start the vetting process, evaluate and then wait for the Mariner to send in his second form of Id and was able to issue.

Now, the Mariner will sit on a shelf in a backlog if 2 forms of ID are not received. Once both Identifications have been received then the Background check will begin, once Mariner has cleared then the evaluation process will begin. NMC has started kicking back files to be resubmitted for vetting on all mariners submitting with one form of ID.
