Community Outreaches

At Kirby, were family! Community Outreaches are a great way that Kirby welcomes its employees and their family into the Kirby family. These events are free and fun for the entire family and a great opportunity to put a name with a face! Kirby’s own shore staff cooks enough food to feed a small army while visiting with friends and family. Kids are entertained by everything from jumpabouts to piñatas to face painting and everyone loves the door-prize drawings. Since our humble beginning in 2000, over 6,500 people have participated with the community outreaches with a record 1,400 people attending the Channelview company picnic in October of 2006! 2008 Community Outreach Pictures and Information Port Neches, TX pictures and information Lafayette, LA pictures and information...

Testimonials

A 3rd Mate - Maritime Graduates Story Joining the Kirby Team has been a life-changing experience from the start. I started out in June of 2006 at the Kirby Training Facility. There I got a great footing and a taste of what goes on in the tow-boating industry. I was very anxious to get out and get my hands on the sticks. When class was over, I was sent to my new home on the M/V Dixie Vandal to being my training with a very helpful group of guys. Within five months, I was running a watch by myself at night through what I learned was called The Ditch. It was then that I realized that all my hard work and training at the New York Maritime College had finally paid off. Now as a pilot on the Creole Tut, I am enjoying my time running the west end. I am very happy with the career choice that I made for myself and am excited to move up the ranks towards captain. Here at Kirby, there are no limitations. I like to say to say to people that if you are hungry, Kirby is going to feed you. With...

Port Neches Family Outreach

Over one hundred people attended the first Kirby Community Outreach event of the season on Saturday, March 8, in Port Neches, Texas. Gorgeous cool but sunny weather greeted Kirby employees and their families who gathered to enjoy tasty shrimp prepared by our own Mike Wike as well as hot dogs and hamburgers grilled to perfection by Ed Reioux and the Vessel Operations team with his new grill. Kids enjoyed two jumpabouts, while both adults and kids enjoyed sno-cones. Seeing our own M/V Midas passing by reminded everyone the reasons why we have these events. Even if the men and women who work long hours cannot attend, their families are part of the Kirby Inalnd Marine family and we encourage them to come out for some fun! The contest was open on September 15 and closed on November 1st, with 185 photos being submitted. This year the parameters included a preference for digital photos, no camera phones, and they had to be specifically related to the industry. After another super secret process, the winners were chosen. This years winners are Eric Cox, James Bates, Jeff Barrow, Josh Owens, Juergen Schultze, Kenneth Penn, Michael Gilbert, Scott Maliden, and Zachary McGavitt. Thank you to everyone who submitted a picture. The pictures will be used in other publications and all are available for viewing online at www.kirbycorpjobs.com. We look forward to next year’s entries, so begin taking pictures now! Send them in any time during the year...

Testimonials

Pay while trained, from Trainee to Tankerman I have worked different jobs in the past, and I have found that working for Kirby suits me best. I dont know of many companies that will pay while training or offer you the opportunities for advancement like Kirby does. The pay that Kirby offers very competitive as well. The benefits (life insurance, 401K, health, retirement, etc.) are also very good considering the fact that other jobs I had dont offer them. I look forward to a long and rewarding career with Kirby. Heath Burns Tankerman, M/V Vandal Trainee to Pilot My name is Toby Brittain and I started as a trainee in July of 2002. I was told when I started my career with Kirby that I would have countless opportunities to move up in the company, and with a little hard work, support from my family, I can honestly say that this is a true statement. After four months of training, I had a Tankerman Ticket and from there followed the line of progression. In September...

Maine Maritime Academy Graduates at Kirby

Todd Behlke, '99

Todd came to Kirby Inland Marine after graduation and began his career as a Steersman in our Canal division. He heard of Kirby while attending Maine and participated in an offshore co-op opportunity during the summer of 1998. During his co-op summer, he learned about the numerous opportunities at Kirby which influenced his career decision. He chose to continue working for Kirby because of the rapidly growing inland industry and the potential opportunities. He began as a Steersman and now works as a Port Captain. Working in the inland waters isn’t always easy. While working aboard the boats, Todd never realized how big of a company Kirby is, and how the size can create different, resolvable issues. But despite the growing pains the Kirby has experienced over the years, Todd thinks that at the end of the day, it is rewarding to know that he is part of the whole system and is making a difference. Todd admits, “There are a lot of reasons to work at Kirby; it’s hard to narrow it down. I liked the ability to move up rapidly and the opportunity to move between divisions. Kirby also offered financial security compared to other companies.”

When asked what he would advise a college graduate to think about while making career decisions, he says, “Think about the company and the company’s priorities. Kirby’s stability and focus of the company’s leaders is long-term rather that short term. They are people-focused and Kirby does a lot for its employees. They won’t sacrifice people or safety for profit. People and safety are number one to Kirby, and that’s very important when thinking about where you want to work.”

2008 Calendar Contest

In 2006, we opened a contest for our crew members to help us create a 2007 calendar. The response was overwhelming. We had over 95 entries! After choosing 14 winners, we published the calendar, selling of 150 to friends and family of our amazing crew members. The proceeds went to the Kirby Hardship Relief Fund which helps Kirby family members with when the unexpected tragedy occurs.

We need your help for our 2008 calendar! Please submit photos to Lisa Nally by November 1st in order to be considered for a top prize - a month in next year's calendar as well as a $50 gift card!

<v align="top">

To be considered, be sure to include the name fo the vessel and the people in the picture, where the picture was taken, and who took it.

Some helpful tips:

Digital photos work best

Do not submit camera photos. The resolution is too poor and does not work.

Submit pictures of people!

Be sure there are no safety violations and that the boat/barge is in good shape

The calendars will be available for puchase online after the beginning of the year.
