Deckhands build tows by handling lines and cables to tie and untie barges and boats. Once hired, you will receive a complete benefits package but here is a few things we offer to our vessel employees: Work Schedule All Kirby vessels work a 2-for-1 schedule – typically 14/7, 20/10, or 30/15. Compared to working a typical offshore schedule of 60-120 days onboard at any one time, Kirby’s schedule gives you more frequent off time so you are not gone so long. Kirby also offers opportunities to ride over on your days off for a premium pay in addition to your daily wage. The M/V J.E. O’Donnell’s crew spent their own time and money renovating their boat over the course of the last few months. Captain Dwayne Kelly and his crew began their renovations in March of 2007 and completed the wheelhouse in September. Their intentions are to renovate the entire boat, a little bit each year. In January, they will begin renovating the wheelhouse. Read up on their progress here. Dwayne Kelly knows this work is the joint efforts of his master carpenter, Claude Caffery, and his fellow carpenter, Josh Owens worked on the boats during their off time to complete this task. All three participate in home remodeling when they are off the boat as well. Dwayne Kelly owns Perk Up Coffee, a coffee house which he bought, restored, and now operates in Conyers, GA.

The crew spent did their own woodwork duing their off time, using the spare area on the back of the boat to crewate the beautiful crown molding as seen in the picture above. They also redid the walls (to the left).

2008 Calendar Winners

The 2008 Calendar Contest has come to a conclusion with 13 pictures chosen, taken by nine different photographers. The contest was open on September 15 and closed on November 1st, with 185 photos being submitted. This year the parameters included a preference for digital photos, no camera phones, and they had to be specifically related to the industry. After another super secret process, the winners were chosen. This years winners are Eric Cox, James Bates, Jeff Barrow, Josh Owens, Juergen Schultze, Kenneth Penn, Michael Gilbert, Scott Maliden, and Zachary McGavitt. Pay while trained, from Trainee to Tankerman I have worked different jobs in the past, and I have found that working for Kirby suits me best. Todd came to Kirby Inland Marine after graduation and began his career as a Steersman in our Canal division. He heard of Kirby while attending Maine and participated in an offshore co-op opportunity during the summer of 1998. During his co-op summer, he learned about the numerous opportunities at Kirby which influenced his career decision. He chose to continue working for Kirby because of the rapidly growing inland industry and the potential opportunities. He began as a Steersman and now works as a Port Captain. Working in the inland waters isn’t always easy. While working aboard the boats, Todd never realized how big of a company Kirby is, and how the size can create different, resolvable issues. But despite the growing pains the Kirby has experienced over the years, Todd thinks that at the end of the day, it is rewarding to know that he is part of the whole system and is making a difference. Todd admits, “There are a lot of reasons to work at Kirby; it’s hard to narrow it down. I liked the ability to move up rapidly and the opportunity to move between divisions. Kirby also offered financial security compared to other companies.”

When asked what he would advise a college graduate to think about while making career decisions, he says, “Think about the company and the company’s priorities. Kirby’s stability and focus of the company’s leaders is long-term rather that short term. They are people-focused and Kirby does a lot for its employees. They won’t sacrifice people or safety for profit. People and safety are number one to Kirby, and that’s very important when thinking about where you want to work.”

2008 Calendar Contest

In 2006, we opened a contest for our crew members to help us create a 2007 calendar. The response was overwhelming. We had over 95 entries! After choosing 14 winners, we published the calendar, selling of 150 to friends and family of our amazing crew members. The proceeds went to the Kirby Hardship Relief Fund which helps Kirby family members with when the unexpected tragedy occurs.

We need your help for our 2008 calendar! Please submit photos to Lisa Nally by November 1st in order to be considered for a top prize - a month in next year's calendar as well as a $50 gift card!

To be considered, be sure to include the name fo the vessel and the people in the picture, where the picture was taken, and who took it.

Some helpful tips:

Digital photos work best
Do not submit camera photos. The resolution is too poor and does not work.
Submit pictures of people!
Be sure there are no safety violations and that the boat/barge is in good shape

The calendars will be available for puchase online after the beginning of the year.

Profiling the best tankermen in the maritime industry! Billy Naquin 28 years M/V Alice Jean Career tankermen are gold, and every captain will attest to the fact that they feel lucky to have such fine mariners aboard their vessels. Billy Naquin has spent the last 28 years working for Kirby and is one of the finest tankermen on the waters today. Billy started working for Hollywood Marine on August 15, 1979, aboard the M/V Camellia S. He rode the M/V Alice Jean when it came off the dry dock and has worked aboard the Alice Jean for the better part of the last 25 years. He was on a contract run to Krotz Spring for 20 years and conducted at least 2000 spill free transfers during that period! Kirby is proud of the work that Billy has done over nearly 30 years. But Billy is most proud of his children. Shore Tankermen Job Description

Tankermen prepare barges for the loading and discharging of cargoes, and perform key loading and discharging activities. Tankermen connect and disconnect transfer hoses. Tankermen perform scheduled vessel maintenance care for tools and equipment, and perform general housekeeping duties as assigned by their supervisor. They adhere to company safety policies and procedures and governmental regulations. They work under the supervision of the Master.

Tankermen must have a USCG Merchant Mariner Document (MMD PIC), also known as a Tankermen's Ticket. The Kirby Training Center offers a tankerman trainee program in which new mariners apply through the Accelerated Submittal Process (ASP program). Generally, these trainees are licensed in approximately six months. Our employees also renew their document through our training center, saving a tankerman time and money. Tankermen are expected to progress according to our company’s training program and further their education by attending and successfully completing free, company-sponsored Tankermen training.
