Warrant Officer Job Description

Program Goal 

This position has been developed to hire and train warrant officers to serve as officers onboard inland towing vessels. Successful applicants enter the program as licensed steersmen where they will learn the necessary skills to pilot a towing vessel and tow upon the Inland Waters and Western Rivers. Upon successful completion of the program, candidates will be promoted to a watch-standing pilot position.

Requirements

Applicant must:

 
 
Steersman Joe Parker, M/V Senator Stennis
  • Hold an Apprentice Mate License or a license greater than a Master/Mate 200 GT
  • Hold a Radar Observer or Unlimited
  • Hold a valid MMD endorsed as Able Seaman (AB)
  • Have completed “Time of Sea Service” transcript from a warrant officer 32 week

Objectives 

  • 12 day Basic Deckhand Course
  • Completed Towing Officer Assessment Record (TOAR): Great Lakes/Inland
  • A minimum 60 days of Inland Waters (must log transited routes on steering logs)
  • Completed Towing Officer Assessment Record (TOAR): Western Rivers
  • A minimum 60 days of Western Rivers (must log transited routes on steering logs
  • Advanced Pilothouse Management Program (Simulator)
  • Leadership Training
  • Warrant Officer Project (Procedure Review)
  • Captain’s Progress Checklist (CPC)
  • Captain’s recommendation to pilot a Kirby towing vessel
